THE EAST LONDON LECTURE
THEATRE WORKSHOP / ROSE LIPMAN, LONDON, U.K
Commissioned by Fringe! Film and Arts Fest
East London performance artist Jonny Woo and theatre director Douglas Rintoul introduce participants to the theatre and writing processes they are exploring in the development of Jonny’s show ‘The East London Lecture’ in this practical workshop.
The world as we know it, began in 1995 in The Bricklayers Arms, Shoreditch’. So begins Jonny’s lecture style performance celebrating his own summer of love when he and new friends discovered a seemingly deserted Shoreditch and kick started an obsession with all things East that has lasted for nearly 20 years. Using the transcripts from interviews with his contemporaries from 1995 and local people who are experiencing the unprecedented regeneration of the area, for better or for worse, Jonny presents an entertaining argument about when the ‘Shoredtich Effect’ actually began and gives a lively platform to voices responding to the fallout.
This workshop gives non-theatre practitioners a chance to experience the techniques used to make theatre out of personal interviews with Jonny as the writer and performer and Doug as the director. The workshop included: sharing personal stories and thoughts about East London; using these as a starting point for writing a script; learning theatre games and exercises used in creating character and creating and sharing short devised pieces.
