Tethered is an amalgam of footage recorded from the online platform chatroulette between March and April 2020. It started as voyeuristic practice to witness how the pandemic could be (re)shaping these online channels of communication across the network and it became an exercise of critique on the concept of the saturated self (Gergen). In most cases, during the online visits to the site, the users were given the image of themselves, a sort of feedback of their own immediate reality.

 

The digital promise of togetherness and closeness has repeatedly thrown us into loneliness and a yearning for something even more powerful than intimacy itself, transforming its users into ghostly versions of themselves wandering, lost, in a s(t)imulation of reality where the multiphrenia has become indistinguishable from ‘normal living’*. A constantly emerging new reality to produce significant others, a single endless ‘room’ containing both the infinity of pleasure and the eternity of damnation where hell is other people.

Born in Venezuela and based in Porto, Portugal with a background in theatre, Daniel has been exploring, among others, the concept of Telematic Art, using video as a tool and the internet as a platform, merging both languages into a single object of expression. In this field he aims at reflecting on the impact of technology on everyday life and the environment of the Internet as a reflection of a world where the abstract nature of this transmedia movement changes the notions of space, presence, privacy and identity.

Το Tethered είναι ένα σύνολο από βίντεο που καταγράφηκαν από την διαδικτυακή πλατφόρμα Chatroulette μεταξύ Μαρτίου και Απριλίου 2020. Ξεκίνησε ως ηδονοβλεπτική πρακτική για να παρακολουθήσει πώς η πανδημία θα μπορούσε να (ανα)διαμορφώσει αυτά τα διαδικτυακά κανάλια επικοινωνίας σε όλο το δίκτυο και έγινε μια άσκηση κριτικής στην έννοια του κορεσμένου εαυτού. Στις περισσότερες περιπτώσεις, κατά τη διάρκεια των διαδικτυακών επισκέψεων στον ιστότοπο, οι χρήστες έβλεπαν την εικόνα του εαυτού τους, ένα είδος feedback της δικής τους άμεσης πραγματικότητας.

 

Η ψηφιακή υπόσχεση της συντροφικότητας και της εγγύτητας μας έχει επανειλημμένα ρίξει στη μοναξιά και στη λαχτάρα για κάτι πιο ισχυρό από την ίδια την οικειότητα, μετατρέποντας τους χρήστες της σε φανταστικές εκδοχές του εαυτού τους που περιπλανιούνται, χαμένοι, σε μια ερεθιστική πραγματικότητα όπου η πολυμορφία έχει γίνει δυσδιάκριτη από την "κανονική ζωή "*. Μια διαρκώς αναδυόμενη νέα πραγματικότητα για την παραγωγή σημαντικών "άλλων", ένα ενιαίο ατελείωτο "δωμάτιο" που περιέχει τόσο το άπειρο της απόλαυσης όσο και την αιωνιότητα της καταδίκης, όπου η κόλαση είναι οι άλλοι άνθρωποι.

Γεννημένος στη Βενεζουέλα, αλλά με έδρα το Πόρτο της Πορτογαλίας, έχοντας θεατρικό υπόβαθρο, ο Daniel εξερευνά, μεταξύ άλλων, την έννοια της Τηλεματικής Τέχνης, χρησιμοποιώντας το βίντεο ως εργαλείο και το διαδίκτυο ως πλατφόρμα, συγχωνεύοντας και τις δύο γλώσσες σε ένα ενιαίο αντικείμενο έκφρασης. Προβληματίζεται σχετικά με τον αντίκτυπο της τεχνολογίας στην καθημερινή ζωή και το περιβάλλον του διαδικτύου ως αντανάκλαση του κόσμου, και πως αυτή η αντανάκλαση έχει τη δύναμη να αλλάζει τις έννοιες του χώρου, της παρουσίας, της ιδιωτικότητας και της ταυτότητας.
